Five Minute Friday: Unexpected

Only up since that morning, how could I hope one would come so soon to the feeder when I had rarely seen any visit my yard in the five years it had been mine.

In my chair by the window, with book in hand I read the words, “You can trust Me, Robin.”  Never is my own name in print.  The sun was beginning to go down as I asked once more for a visitor to the bright red nectar.

My thoughts drifted back to August—and the few days of quiet respite at the lake home of a friend.  I had not expected the new friends I made on the back patio.  Flitting, flirting, flying so close to me and stopping in mid-air to stare me down.  These tiny, playful creations—such a gift to a soul weighed down with overwhelming fear and confusion, to the point where putting the “happy” mask on each morning was becoming effort.  Under more pressure than the heart was created for, joy burst.  They freed sweet joy!

Months and hot, summer days were long gone.  Was I looking for the ridiculous or for a life-line?  Wasn’t I really asking for grace?  He had said I could ask Him anything.  Even for a hummingbird?

I read my name, black on white once more . . . looked up—and saw grace perched on red plastic.

*This is my first attempt at Five Minute Fridays after meeting the lovely, Lisa-Jo at Relevant.  She gives a topic to write on and we are to write, non-stop for 5 minutes with no backtracking or editing.  Wow--was that hard for me!  This was more like 7 minutes because at the end of 5 even I was left hanging! :)  Hope that was okay.*

Rest

The one word I have heard repeatedly from the Lord over the past several weeks now has been the one activity I am least capable of achieving—on my own!  And that is to rest . . .

Anxiety, fills me . . .
Hurry, pushes me . . .
Noise, encompasses me . . .
Control, defines me . . .
Busyness, surrounds me . . .
Fear, threatens me . . .

But rest  ? ? ?

Rest, eludes me . . .

Didn’t I just write about this in April?
Writing about truth is one thing . . . learning to live truth is another!

Nearness to Jesus offers me the rest I desperately need for refreshing.  As I abide in Him I collect His strength and recover from the constant onslaught of heaviness living on earth creates.

A heart at rest is kept quiet, calm and expectantly patient!

One tangible way He is teaching me how to rest . . .

“Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD.” (Exodus 14:13)
“Sit still . . . until you know how the matter will turn out.” (Ruth 3:18)
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Hoping (and praying!) to be a quick learner! J

All Jesus!

My reward.  My blessing.  My place.  My prize!

All is contingent upon Jesus and where He takes me—what He decides!

I respond to that recognition and move as He directs me.
I miss out on the present around me when I reach for what He alone controls.

“I lay at your feet, Jesus, any thing that comes in the way of my joy rising from and for Your pleasure!  Where there is lack or the robbing of sincere joy in my life—Holy Spirit reveal and restore!”

I cannot let ugliness rule over my heart.
I will not be ruled by my emotions.

When “feelings” are negative, wrong, contrary to the Spirit they are pleasing to the evil one and I must recognize, move against and dispel his poisonous lies in thought before they have time to take hold in mine!

Poisoning . . .
Building resentment . . .
Growing bitterness . . .
Establishing strongholds . . .

God makes much of me—in the end, He will make much more!
I make much of Him—To “show Christ” is my life!

“Jesus, be my foundation, the reason for any and all motivation behind all that I do—in every area of my life!  You are the foundation of all joy—not success, not recognition, not happy happenstances.  These are all circumstantial and change.
You are stable joy!”

Jesus!  Making much of Jesus!

Jesus is all I need.
Seeking Him . . .
loving Him . . .
yielding to Him . . .

is all I need!

Consider Joy Before “It” Happens (James 1:2)

Yesterday I mentioned I’m studying James.  And yesterday I couldn’t get past "bond-servant"!  Today, I’ll pick up the pace and cover an entire verse! J

“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials.” James 1:2

Consider...

Our friend Mr. Webster says that to consider is, “to think about something carefully—especially with regard to taking some action.”

So would it be much of a stretch then to believe that James was also suggesting that we “consider” joy even before the “it” happens?  James is saying exactly that!

The Greek word here for “consider” is Hegeomai and it means “to lead; to go before”.

Live prepared ahead of time.

Go into your trial already in joy.

Don’t try to muster some up.
Don’t force a smile.
Don’t play the martyr to friends.
No faking it!

And keep “considering”!

Don’t stop leading in joy.
Don’t lose joy in the middle.
Don’t fall apart at the end.
No whining and complaining when it’s over!

The verb tense for this word is the “aorist imperitive”.  That means that it’s a command for doing something in the future.

Oh boy!

This isn’t just a suggestion here, friends.  James isn’t advising us to live this way so that we’ll be happier.  He is commanding us to live this way.

God commands us to live prepared in joy!

Why?
Why would this be so important to God to command it?
What are our trials?

They are our temptations and our sufferings.
They come by way of people and circumstances.
They are tailor-made experiences just for us!
Yippee!  J

“And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace {tailor-made grace and wisdom for my trial!} who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.”  1 Peter 4:10

Look how those build upon one another...step—by—step...

“perfect”accomplish goal (of the trial)
            “confirm”steadfastly set
                        “strengthen”make strong
                                    “establish”ground; settle; lay a foundation

This is where God wants to take us!
This is what He wants for us!
That’s why He commands joy in the journey!

The journey to established faith is worth rejoicing—
in, over and through!

And if He is the foundation of our joy (which we talked about the other day) we can go in, over and through the trial with a constant flow.

Father, Humble me and empty me of all pride.  I want to trust you fully with no anxieties—for all provision, including the flow of joy, while I stand firm and resist the evil one.  I stand firm in the grace of salvation!  Amen!

Be Still And Know That I Am God!

A few days back I shared with a friend how I awoke that morning to God speaking sweet words over me. I didn’t even realize it was Him at first.  But once the grogginess began to wear off I knew the words in thought were His and took in all He was saying.  I smiled, saying "thank you God", and although soon after I couldn't remember one thing He had said—I knew it was loving and sweet and I carried the warmth of that moment with me into the rest of the day.

My friend likened it to a mother waking her children in a loving manner. The children may not remember what she said, but they knew it was time to get up and Mama was loving them awake.

This morning was different. I awoke to chaotic conversations vying for my attention. Some were urgent. I couldn't tell you now what they were saying or asking, but I do remember the confusion, the urgency, and the noise.

All of a sudden I heard the words, "Be still and know that I Am God."

    And that was that!

No more words, no more chaos, no more...anything!

Usually when I think of that phrase it's because I am frazzled or in a place of the unknown or unexpected and I am worried...scared even. But this was different. I wasn't feeling any of those feelings (I was just trying to wake up :). So when the words came, along with some awakeness, I asked for more:

BE STILL—stay at rest, in a quiet-hearted place...like this wake up time...

AND KNOW—know what you believe in, have faith in... "IS!" Don't fret over what is confusing or what hasn’t been made clear to you yet.  Be confident in what you do "know". Keep "knowing" it firmly, passionately, resolutely...

THAT Inot the world, not the United Nations, not the US economy or failing dollar, not the wars going on, not the candidates for political office, not the validated concerns you have for the future concerning your family, the church, etc. "I" the "I AM"…your Abba Father—the only True Sovereign—yep, that "I"...

AM GODElohim "the Creator"; El Roi "the God Who Sees"; El Shaddai "the All-Sufficient One"; El Elyon "the God Most High"; Jehovah-jireh "The LORD Will Provide"; Jehovah-rapha "The LORD that Healeth"; Jehovah-shalom "The LORD is peace"; Jehovah-sabaoth "The LORD of Hosts"; Jehovah-raah "The LORD My Shepherd"; Jehovah-tsidkenu "The LORD Our Righteousness"; Jehovah-shammah "The LORD Is There"; El Olam "The Everlasting God"            ...well, you get the picture! :)

There is a lot that I want to accomplish in my home today. Several things needing to get done. But my heart and my mind feel like resting—to simply "be still".

By keeping these thoughts in my immediate thoughts, I am resisting all the "hype" outside my doors and "tyranny of the urgent" from within.

That we can confidently rest knowing we are well cared for—watched over! What joy!

    Rest with me, will you?

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT HE IS GOD!

Still Thinkin' On Joy & Hope

Because my hope—my confident expectation of good—is in God, I can (and should) live joyfully no matter life’s circumstances around me.  Regardless of the “stuff” I. am. His!

I am saved and being saved!  (Luke 19:10)
I am free and being freed!  (Galatians 5:1)

The hope that lives within me (1 Peter 1:3; Col. 1:27) initiates my joy!  Joy unspeakable and full of glory—His glory!

When my hope is truly vested in Him, I should have no concerns.  All my concerns are in His care and if they are in His care and I have faith in His unwavering, unchanged character (and I do!) than joy should be the result!  Not worry or fear. (Heb. 10:23)

If God is for me—who can be against me?  What could possibly happen that He has not allowed for His glory and for my good?  In any and every situation—I. will. be. fine!

There is my joy.  My joy stems from the truth that I believe without doubt God is for me and not against me.  My faithfulness is the foundation of my joy.

Joy is—can be—because He never fails.  He never forgets. He never walks away—even for a moment.  He never lets me down.

Joy is God’s faithfulness manifested in my life.

The one without God, without His safety, without His faithfulness is the one without hope of the assurance of a good end result.  My hope is assured!  Therefore...joy!

The more I hope, the more joy I walk in, the more solid my faith.  My faith solidifies and grows down deep as I trust in the hope that is to come. (1 Peter 1:13)

    Hope grows my faith.
    Hope grows my joy.

When my hope falters—weakens upon a difficult or unforeseen circumstance—my faith gets shaky.  Doubt and despair will creep in and I will lose my joy.

“Blessed is the man who trust in the Lord, and whose hope is in the Lord.”  Jeremiah 17:7

My hope is in the Lord.  The flesh, the world and the evil one work to stop its flow.

Our hope stays vibrant and strong by...
    Knowing the Truth
    Walking in the Truth
    Speaking the Truth
Renouncing any lies the evil one feeds our mind
Rebuking any of our own thoughts (those fed by the world of untruth) that goes against God’s character.

“Through perseverance and the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.”  Romans 15:4b

Holy Spirit—fan the flame of hope that lives within me!

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”  Romans 15:13

    Learning Joy

When I think of Jesus, even in the busy-ness of His short 3 year ministry, He rested.  And when the 3 years came to an end, It. Was. Finished.  Nothing was left to be done.  All was accomplished that needed to be.  The same is true for me and for you.  That’s why enjoying the ride is so important.  The ending is good—it’s perfection!  So I want to enjoy the ride, not be fretful over it.

Joy requires that I rest with God, trusting Him.  I struggle with that one.  I don’t rest well...period!  I can do anxious, excited, and other such emotions quite well—but relaxing and waiting on Him, with Him, is not my speciality—yet!  But I’m learning...

I am learning that the path is His.  And He will show me the way to walk it.  The striving is mostly gone now and the restlessness has lessened.  He is patient, isn’t He?  He will take all the time we need to help us grow!

I am learning that joy is the bedrock of my faith.  If there is no joy—only duty, guilt, shame, fear, failure feelings and burdensome yokes in following Christ—than I am saddened for me!  God is saddened for me!  Because there is much joy, much peace available to me through Christ.  I have access to it just as I have access to His power and authority (Eph. 1:19-22, 2:6; Col. 2:9-10).

He wants us to exercise our rights as a purchased Lamb of God!  He wants us to live in the joy that is ours through Christ Jesus.

So is joy a mindset?  Yes and no...

I have a choice to live in joy and to actively go after what is coming against me when I recognize joylessness in me.  But joy is also one of the fruits of the Spirit.  God’s joy comes directly from the Holy Spirit.  We get to share in this divine nature of God’s by allowing His Holy Spirit to transmit and impart this divine quality right into our soul and personality!  Joy is made available to us as long as we are walking in and by the Spirit.

Joy is our strength!  When every one else is weary, grumbling, fearful and complaining about life’s difficulties, God gives His children...joy!

I’ve done a lot of thinking about all that I’m learning after my confessions from yesterdayThere are a lot of places in my heart in need of a Jesus filling.  Today I believe I will find joy just resting and being loved on by Abba.

May you find joy resting in His arms today as well!

    Confessions

Well...(sheepish grin here J) I’m thinking I should have covered myself in prayer a bit longer this morning before posting that little diddy on joy!  In the 4 hours since that went up, it got pretty interesting around here.

First, I found out that our iron is now not working.  I honestly cannot tell you how many things, appliances, body parts and vehicles have given in to the stress of functioning properly lately.  It’s a lot!

Secondly, my fifth blessing is on a mission this morning to single-handedly wipe out any joy lurking in her midst.  I find it more than coincidental or “interesting” that this is a regular occurrence with her seeing that her middle name IS JoyDon’t think the adversary is gonna let that one go by unnoticed!

Thirdly, my house is a mess!  Now...that may not mean much to the rest of you all—but them’s ingredients for ugly words in the making of this sinner’s fleshly heart.  No one else seems to see the joy invoked by clean, neat and tidy like I do.  And we are missing it all over the place here today!

And then there were all the “little” things (those things that just seem to slowly let the air out of my joy balloon).  A phone call message that means more responsibility than I wish I was responsible for right now.  The voter pamphlet sitting on my desk...and ALL the feelings that little baby stirs up in me.  Being asked by my third blessing what the writing assignment was for the week and having to admit I didn’t have it ready for him...again.  And add to that the frustration with our heating system as I wait for the furnace man to come make a visit tomorrow.

    Joy—where for art thou, joy?

It’s in there...down deep.  It’s wrapped up in the hope seed growing in my soul-dirt.  Just need to confess my failings, receive the washing of forgiveness and let those same waters of grace water that seed!  No shame, no condemnation...He’s the God of many second-chances!  He smiles on a repentant heart!

God is for me!  Nothing can be against me—unless I allow it.

Now, four hours into my confession of joy I hear in the other room my fifth and sixth blessing sharing anything but joy with one another.

I gotta run, but wanted to be real with you and let you know we’re all in this together.  Learning, growing, sharing, repenting, forgiving, maturing....  I’m so glad you’re with me.  It makes the walk less lonely, the failings less burdensome.

The joy of the Lord IS. MY. STRENGTH!  I pray it is yours today as well.  And I pray your iron works for ya too! J

    Joy!

Will I be remembered for Joy?  Will you?

I want to live joyfully, hopefully, lovingly, faithfully!  Just for myself!!!  But I know too that the joy of the Lord permeates the air around a joy-filled person like a sweet smelling, intoxicating fragrance.

I want to rest in joy, live in joy, pursue in joy, encourage in joy, grieve in joy....  Let joy so overtake me that misery cannot stand a chance.

So how do we frustrate the enemy’s attempts to rob us of our joy?

    Delight in life!
    Delight in God!
    Delight in those around us!
    Delight in being!

    Rejoice in every thing!
    Rejoice in all things!
    Rejoice in our calling!
    Rejoice in our hope!

In our day in and day out regimen of routine, joy needs to be our pinnacle foundation.  The root that grows down deep and holds us steadfast in the worst of storms.  The joy of the Lord truly is our strength!

    Joy is intoxicating!

Make others drunk around you by your infectious resolve to maintain a true spirit of joy regardless of what this world throws at you.  One who trusts in God—really trusts Him—can remain in joy regardless of any situation.  Ahh...tough to picture in me now, but true!

Joy was not designed to be dependant upon circumstance.  That is happiness.  “Happy” comes from the root word “happenstance”.  True joy is not fakey, calloused, lovelessness wearing a smile.  Joy is hope (confident expectation of God’s goodness) realized down to one’s core...the soul.

When our hope in God through Jesus Christ resides steadfast down deep—our lives, our messages and our ministries will explode!  With God’s kind of joy, firmly planted in hope, established with trust.

I will never have a powerful testimony until I resist the evil one’s attempts and ability to bring me down emotionally.  Being easily swayed by circumstance does not entice any one!

There is nothing victorious about joylessness!

Dear God—I pray that joy would so envelop me that I would...
Be joy to a joyless people!
Be light to a dying world!
Be hope to the hurt and sorrowful!
Be Jesus’ joy to whomever I come in contact with!
I cannot be full of joy if I am full of self.  Selfishness, self focus, self pity do not mix with Jesus and, therefore, cannot mix with joy.  It’s one or the other...and it’s my choice!
Help me to replace wrong thought patterns with joy!
Help me to replace wrong attitudes with joy!
Help me to replace discontent and ingratitude with joy!
Help me to replace all that robs me with the lavishness of joy!
By your grace through the Holy Spirit within...Amen!
