The Voice In The Storm

Today found me in the 29th Psalm. The storm clouds are gathering and David is concentrated on glorifying God...

“Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of the mighty, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in holy array.” (vs. 1, 2)

God often speaks to us in the storm. I am always trying to listen for His voice, but never so much as when in the midst of stormy weather. David states above that we should be giving Him glory as we are looking for His powerful strength.

Here is a synopsis of verses 3-9...

The voice of the Lord is upon the waters...
God thunders...
The Lord is over great waters...
The voice of the Lord is powerful...
The voice of the Lord is majestic...
The voice of the Lord breaks in pieces...
The voice of the Lord hews out flames of fire...
The voice of the Lord shakes...
The Lord causes to whirl...
The voice of the Lord makes...
In His temple everything says, “Glory!”

WOW! God is in control of the storm, is He not?

The voice of the Lord breaks...
Need anything broken over you today? Strongholds, fears, failures, wrong perceptions, weaknesses, temptations, peer given labels, depression, defeating struggles and sins? The mere spoken words of God can break your conflicts into pieces!

The voice of the Lord shakes...
“The LORD roars...and the heavens and the earth tremble But the LORD is a refuge for His people” Joel 3:16. The description given in this word is “of causing something to whirl”. No matter what is whirling all around me, the Lord is my refuge and He is in control of the whirling. Nothing can shake me loose of His unshakeable embrace.

The voice of the Lord makes...
O Lord, lead me in Your righteousness...make Your way straight before me. Psalm 5:8
Make me know Your ways, O LORD; Teach me Your paths. Psalm 25:4
Make me understand the way of Your precepts. Psalm 119:27
He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:6
You will make me full of gladness with Your Presence. Acts 2:28

God makes things happen. Not only is He the ultimate mover and shaker...but preeminent breaker as well.

Look again at the last part of verse 9... "in His temple everything says, “Glory!” Now compare that with what we read in 1 Corinthians 6:19:

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?"

Glorifying God within my body may not always be easy...and it is definitely not instinctive...but I believe when we “ascribe to the Lord glory and strength” (v. 1) then ‘The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace.” (v. 11)

When the storm starts whirling and the flood waters start rising, be reminded...

“The Lord sat as King at the flood; Yes, The Lord sits as King forever.” (v. 10)
